Caucus Chairman Emanuel Issues Letter to Bolten on President's Comments on Congress

Today Democratic Caucus Chairman Rahm Emanuel released the following letter to White House Chief of Staff Joshua B. Bolten regarding President Bush's comments on the United States Congress as reported by Sheryl Gay Stolberg in today's New York Times:

The following is the text of the letter:

Dear Mr. Bolten:

It has long been the custom that members of Congress do not go overseas and criticize the President--that partisanship ends at the water's edge. But reading today's accounts of the President's remarks in Australia, it is clear he has a different view.

Asked about the lack of political progress in Iraq, the President said Iraq's Parliament had passed 60 laws, and added, "It's more than our legislature passed."

Hearing on Bridge Safety

The Transportation Committee is currently holding a hearing on structurally deficient bridges. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), of 597,340 bridges in the United States, 73,784 are structurally deficient. In light of the recent tragic collapse of the I-35W bridge in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Members of Congress and their constituents have been working to obtain as much information as possible about the condition of bridges in their districts.

Pelosi: GAO Report Latest Assessment to Conclude That Iraqis Have Failed to Meet Political Benchmarks

Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on the General Accounting Report on Iraq, which shows that Iraq has failed to meet all but three of 18 required benchmarks for political and military progress:

The independent GAO report released today contrasts sharply with President Bush's stay-the-course Iraq strategy. The GAO report is the latest in a series of assessments to conclude that the Iraqi government has failed to meet nearly every political, economic and security benchmark laid out by President Bush himself in January.

Democrats stand with the American people and are committed to bringing our troops home safely and soon. It is time to refocus our nation's efforts on fighting the real threats of terrorism around the world.
