U.S. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi and Congressmen Harry Mitchell and Ed Pastor toured the Carl T. Hayden VA Medical Center in Phoenix Wednesday offering promises for financial relief to recovering soldiers.The Democrats said the purpose of the visit was to experience the facility and to discuss the different measures being taken to improve veterans' care.
HOUSE DEMOCRATS COMMIT TO A PARTNERSHIP FOR THE FUTURENEW ORLEANS, LA--Just prior to the second anniversary of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, Democrats returned to the Gulf Coast to recommit themselves to a Partnership for the Future. In a congressional delegation trip to the Gulf Coast region this week, led by House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, democratic lawmakers made a new commitment.
"We are not done with our work in this region, because you are not done," said Clyburn. "We extend our hand in friendship and partnership for the future."
At the conclusion of their tour through the region Democrats outlined their legislative priorities to continue a New Direction for the Gulf Coast . Those priorities include but are not limited to:

In what she saw as her last chance to collect the Road Home money to rebuild her Lower 9th Ward home, Valeria Schexnayder made her way through a gaggle of officialdom and corralled House Speaker Nancy Pelosi during a congressional visit to the area Tuesday.She sought to seize the attention of the highest-ranking female politician in U.S. history, just as she was about to leave the working-class neighborhood's now-fabled wasteland. "They even told us last night that they ran out of money," Schexnayder said, tears welling up as Pelosi hugged her and thanked her for sharing her story. "This is my last chance. My only chance."

A key congressman reassured beleaguered teachers and school administrators Monday that Congress is working to speed recovery in the hurricane-ravaged Gulf Coast of Mississippi and Louisiana.House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn noted a House bill that would provide millions of dollars for affordable housing on the coast nearly two years after Hurricane Katrina. He also said the Democrat-led Congress would support removing the Federal Emergency Management Agency from the Department of Homeland Security.
"The need for Karl Rove to explain his role in the firing of the U.S. Attorneys does not diminish when he leaves the White House. Our investigation to date has revealed the White House's contempt for the rule of law and its interest in the politicization of the Department of Justice."While resignations at DoJ and the White House continue to mount, questions raised by this investigation remain. We will continue to seek answers to these questions and expect full cooperation from Mr. Rove and other officials regardless of whether they are employed by the White House."
