After failing to take action for years when they controlled Congress, Republican leaders are now preventing the New Direction Congress from implementing the independent 9/11 Commission recommendations that would protect Americans from terrorism. And while Democrats have passed legislation to make this the most open and accountable Congress in history, Senate Republicans continue to block our efforts to change the way business is done in Washington.
Chairman Miller Says Push to Pass Employee Free Choice Act Will Go OnWASHINGTON, D.C. -- U.S. Rep. George Miller (D-CA), chairman of the House Education and Labor Committee, issued the following statement today after Republican Senators blocked the Senate from voting on the Employee Free Choice Act:
"The majority of the House of Representatives has voted to pass the Employee Free Choice Act, and a majority of the Senate has shown that it would vote to pass the legislation, too, if given the opportunity. Sen. Richard Lugar, a senior Republican and a reliable vote for President Bush on the war, said Monday that Bush's Iraq strategy was not working and that the U.S. should downsize the military's role. The unusually blunt assessment deals a political blow to Bush, who has relied heavily on GOP support to stave off anti-war legislation.
It also comes as a surprise. Most Republicans have said they were willing to wait until September to see if Bush's recently ordered troop buildup in Iraq was working.
