This afternoon Rep. Tom Udall (NM-03) honored Army Sergeant James C. Akin, a native of New Mexico who lost his life to a roadside bomb in Iraq on June 3, 2007. He is one of 3,512 Americans who have given their lives to date.

Rep. Udall quotes Sergeant Akin:

"Live life to serve because you can. Dissent because you can. Enjoy freedom because you can. Remember always that the measure of our progress is not whether we can provide more for those who have plenty, but whether we can provide enough for those who have little."

Immigration Judges Often Picked Based On GOP Ties

The Bush administration increasingly emphasized partisan political ties over expertise in recent years in selecting the judges who decide the fate of hundreds of thousands of immigrants, despite laws that preclude such considerations, according to an analysis by The Washington Post.

At least one-third of the immigration judges appointed by the Justice Department since 2004 have had Republican connections or have been administration insiders, and half lacked experience in immigration law, Justice Department, immigration court and other records show.

Yesterday Members of the House Committee on Science and Technology's Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations and Members of the Senate Subcommittee on Space, Aeronautics and Related Sciences held a joint hearing to review the case against NASA Inspector General Robert "Moose" Cobb. Cobb remains on the job after a six-month investigation by the President's Council on Integrity and Efficiency (PCIE) found that Cobb had abused his authority and exhibited the appearance of a lack of independence from NASA management.

Yesterday the Education and Labor Committee held a hearing, "Protecting U.S. and Guest Workers: the Recruitment and Employment of Temporary Foreign Labor."

Chairman George Miller:

"By preventing U.S. employers from exploiting cheap foreign labor, we will not only end these serious human rights violations, but we will also help fight against a race to the bottom in wages and benefits for all workers in this country."

Baldemar Velasquez, Founder of the Farm Labor Organizing Committee:

"Until we can protect the basic human rights of current guest workers, it is difficult to talk about expanding those programs..."

The Oversight Subcommittee on Domestic Policy is currently holding a hearing, "Hot Fuel: Big Oil's Double Standard for Measuring Gasoline." The hearing is examining high gasoline prices, specifically addressing the "hot fuels" problem -- during the summer, the amount of gasoline by weight in a gallon is less than the same gallon pumped during winter. Oil executives were invited to testify but did not appear.
