Image removed. On March 22, the House considered H.R. 1433, the DC Voting Rights Act. During consideration of the Voting Rights Act on the floor, Republicans offered a motion to recommit the bill that was designed to kill the bill -- sending it back to the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform with instructions to add language repealing the District's ban on semiautomatic weapons and prohibiting the DC government from passing new gun control measures. I concur with the view of the distinguished Senate Majority Leader that this was a productive meeting with the President. He took the time to hear our views and shared his with us. We came here in a spirit of hope, recognizing that this is an historic opportunity for the President and the Congress to work together to wind down this war and to ensure the security of our country and the stability of the region.

We came in the spirit of hope that the President would take yes for an answer. The legislation that we will send to his desk certainly supports the troops. It gives the President everything he asks for as the Senate Majority Leader said, and more. So it supports the troops, it honors our commitments to our veterans, which of course these commitments have been unfulfilled. And it holds the Iraqi government accountable.

The American people lost and the special interests won today after Senate Republicans blocked the Medicare prescription drug bill.

The Senate vote occurred on the same day that Families USA issued a new report finding that drug prices are going up despite the repeated assertions by the Bush Administration that Medicare Part D is bringing drug prices down. The report finds that for the top 15 drugs prescribed for seniors, the median Medicare Part D price has skyrocketed in the last year, growing by 9.2 percent -- almost four times the inflation rate of 2.4 percent.
