San Francisco – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released this statement after the Supreme Court announced that next session, it will step in and hear Republicans' Texas v. U.S. lawsuit seeking to strike down protections for people with pre-existing conditions and the entirety of the Affordable Care Act. The Fifth Circuit had previously sent the case back to district court, which would have prolonged uncertainty over the law.

"The Affordable Care Act is an essential pillar of health and financial security for American families, and its protections are even more critical during a dangerous epidemic. But even in the middle of the coronavirus crisis, the Trump Administration continues to ask the court to destroy protections for people with pre-existing conditions and tear away health coverage from tens of millions of Americans.

However, many significant additional steps remain to achieve comprehensive and enduring peace. These steps include the opening of critical intra-Afghan negotiations between Afghan political leaders, the Taliban and civil society to advance a political settlement and permanent, sustainable ceasefire agreement.

Dear Colleague,

Sadly and prayerfully, today, we learned of the first death from the coronavirus in the United States. The American people expect and deserve a well-coordinated, whole-of-government, fully-funded response to the coronavirus threat that addresses this public health crisis in a smart, scientific and strategic way.

An important step that Congress must take is to ensure the government has the resources needed to combat this deadly virus and keep Americans safe. To that end, House appropriators are working to advance a strong emergency funding supplemental package that fully addresses the scale and seriousness of this public health crisis, which we hope to bring to the Floor next week.

Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi joined Chairwoman Carolyn Maloney and other Members of Congress for the dedication of the Committee on Oversight and Reform Hearing Room in honor of the late Chairman Elijah E. Cummings. Below are the Speaker's remarks:

Speaker Pelosi. Thank you, Steny. Clearly, Mr. Clyburn didn't think you needed an introduction to this crowd.

[Laughter]

Thank you, for your kind words – not so fast on the historic part, but anyway.

[Laughter]

Welcome again to Maya, to Jennifer, to sister Yvonne, brother James, cousin Carmen, nephew Anthony. I'm sorry Adia and Diane are not here. They are missed. Please give them our regards and gratitude for sharing the wonderful Elijah Cummings with us.

It was really an honor to serve with him, and I know that many of us here considered it a joy to call him friend.
