Washington, D.C. – Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released this statement after the Supreme Court handed down a 5-4 decision in the case of Janus v. AFSCME Council 31:

Washington, D.C. – Today, Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi sent a letter to Speaker Paul Ryan requesting a bipartisan briefing for Members of the U.S. House of Representatives by senior officials of the federal agencies responsible for reuniting children and parents separated at the U.S.-Mexico border as a result of the Trump Administration’s cruel and inhumane family separation policy.

“Chairman Joe Crowley has been an unwavering champion for America’s working families for almost two decades.  To know Congressman Crowley is to know his fierce pride in representing Queens and the Bronx, and the joy and effectiveness he brought to serve as their voice in the Congress. 

Leader Pelosi.  Thank you very much Leader Schumer for your very tremendous leadership in this fight over time, and you have been engaged in it.  It’s an honor to be here with you, with Senator [Maggie] Hassan, who speaks so eloquently as a Senator, as a Governor, who understands the impact of change in policy in D.C. and the health and wellbeing of people in her state, and most importantly, as a mom, I look forward to hearing her your inspirational words. 

Tomorrow, House Republicans will bring to the floor an unacceptable and inhumane immigration bill that doubles down on President Trump’s mass deportation agenda and does nothing to address the immediate crisis of families separated at the border.

“Republicans broke the bank handing massive giveaways to big corporations and the wealthiest 1 percent through their tax scam for the rich, and now are cynically using the deficit they created to justify slashing Medicare, Medicaid and the health care of the American people.

“The Supreme Court’s dangerous ruling undermines our values, our security and our Constitution.  No matter how many times the President rewrites his un-American Muslim ban, it won’t change the fact that this historic injustice is immoral and dangerous.

“Today’s decision is a grave step backwards in our nation’s fight to protect and advance the rights of women and opens the door for anti-choice activists to deceive and prey on vulnerable women seeking complete, accurate and unbiased information critical to their health and wellbeing.
