"We want America to wake up on New Year's Day 2018 with a new tax system." – Speaker Ryan this AM on tax reform
Reality check: The Republican tax vision from Speaker Ryan is nothing but another tax cut for the wealthiest few on the backs of hard-working American families.
So the Speaker and House Republicans want America to ‘wake up' next year with a new GOP tax code that would:
- Blow a huge hole in the deficit – at least $3 trillion over the next ten years.
- Hide the fact that the Bush tax cuts for the high-end did not create jobs and only increased the deficit.
- Pave the way for cutting Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, and the Affordable Care Act.

Today, House Republicans blocked the immediate consideration of the bipartisan DREAM Act and signed their names to President Trump’s cowardly assault on innocent DREAMers across America. DACA recipients had the courage and patriotism to step out of the shadows, but House Republicans don’t have the courage or decency to hold an up or down vote on the DREAM Act.

In the meeting, the President and Congressional leadership agreed to pass aid for Harvey, an extension of the debt limit, and a continuing resolution both to December 15, all together. Both sides have every intention of avoiding default in December and look forward to working together on the many issues before us.

Democrats are prepared to offer our votes for the Harvey aid package, and a short term debt limit increase of three months. Given Republican difficulty in finding the votes for their plan, we believe this proposal offers a bipartisan path forward to ensure prompt delivery of Harvey aid as well as avoiding a default, while both sides work together to address government funding, DREAMers, and health care.
