In 2005, President Bush and Congressional Republicans tried to privatize Social Security and cut benefits. Democrats and the American people said no. As we celebrate Social Security on its 75th anniversary next month, Social Security is once again under assault by Congressional Republicans. We're saying no again. This afternoon, the Senate finally passed a motion to proceed on legislation that will extend emergency relief for jobless Americans. Instead of immediately acting on the bill, as over 2.5 million workers have already lost their unemployment insurance, Senate Republicans are using another legislative tactic to delay final passage:

On NBC's Meet the Press, a Republican leader Rep. Pete Sessions (R-TX) admitted the Republican economic plan for the future is more of the same failed Bush-Republican policies that got us into this mess:

David Gregory: "...I think what a lot of people want to know is if Republicans do get back into power, what are they going to do?..."

On Sunday, a top Republican leader--Rep. Pete Sessions (R-TX)--admitted the Republican economic plan for the future is more of the same failed Bush-Republican policies that got us into this mess. On Meet the Press, he explained:

Today Republican Leader John Boehner put his mouth where the money is. After a meeting this morning with a bevy of special interest lobbyists, and one day after he called for the repeal of Wall Street reform, he said:

"I think having a moratorium on new federal regulations is a great idea."

Boehner said the ban would send "a wonderful signal to the private sector that they're going to have some breathing room."

Today, the Economic Policy Institute (EPI) released a report on the economic benefits of unemployment insurance. The report concluded that expanded unemployment benefits:

Added 1.15 million American jobs since 2007

Promoted spending by the jobless that increased hours worked for those who already have jobs

Resulted in a 1.7% boost in the nation's GDP

The Affordable Care Act signed into law in March recognized that an increased emphasis and attention to prevention was vital to achieve the goal of a healthier America. 7 in 10 Americans die each year as a result of a chronic disease (like diabetes or heart disease) and make up 75% of the nation's health care costs. These diseases are oven preventable, but many Americans don't get the preventative care they need.
