Today, by obstructing progress on the DISCLOSE Act, Senate Republicans protected the special interests and voted to support takeovers of our elections by big corporations, even those that are foreign-controlled. Senate Republicans blocked a bill that reaffirms a fundamental American value: the right to vote is afforded to the people, not the special interests.
The DISCLOSE Act passed the House last month with bipartisan support, and deserves the same in the Senate.

In a desperate attempt to distract from their admission that the GOP economic strategy is more of the same failed Bush-Republican policies that got us into this mess, Congressional Republicans are telling reporters that they are crafting an agenda that will focus on fiscal responsibility and creating jobs.
Facts are stubborn things--despite news reports of a new agenda, the Congressional Republican agenda is already on the record voting against fiscal responsibility and bills to protect and create American jobs:

By a vote of 272-152, this afternoon the House passed Senate amendments to the Unemployment Compensation Extension Act which the Senate passed last night. This emergency legislation will extend unemployment insurance (UI) benefits to millions of Americans families, which Republicans have held up for more than 7 weeks causing more than 2.5 million families to lose their lifeline that they have earned through their work.

After joining President Bush in his failed attempt to privatize Social Security, House Republican Leader John Boehner and Congressional Republicans are at it again.
Yesterday, Boehner described the GOP's alternative budget proposal -- authored by Republican Congressman Paul Ryan of Wisconsin -- as "a pretty good list of options" when it comes to dealing with the deficit:

Today, the House passed two bills in response to the disastrous BP oil spill. The first bill, the Oil Pollution Research and Development Program Reauthorization (H.R. 2693), will strengthen research, development, and demonstration of innovative tools, methods, and technologies for oil spill cleanup. The fact that we are responding to the BP oil spill with basically the same technology that we used with the Exxon Valdez spill over 20 years ago pretty much says it all.

Today, President Obama signed the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act into law--common-sense rules to ensure Wall Street and big banks can't play Russian Roulette again with our futures. We know from experience they're not going to police themselves.
