On July 1st, the House passed the Restoration of Emergency Unemployment Compensation Act to restore and extend emergency unemployment benefits--not only a much-needed lifeline for Americans who have lost jobs through no fault of their own and their families, but also a proven boost to our struggling economy.

83% of House Republicans voted no on the bill and Senate Republicans have obstructed the legislation repeatedly claiming that these emergency benefits for those out of work due to the Bush recession must be paid for.

The President's Council of Economic Advisers (CEA) released its quarterly report on the impact of the Recovery Act today--finding that the legislation has saved or created as many as 3.6 million jobs so far. They also found that more than 10 percent of the Recovery Act funds have leveraged significant private investment, with each dollar leveraging three dollars in private investment:

In a new Washington Post/ABC News poll released today, more than 6 in 10 Americans (62%) support Congressional action to extend unemployment benefits for jobless workers.

The National HIV/AIDS Strategy represents the nation's first comprehensive plan to reduce the impact of HIV/AIDS in this country. The strategy sets specific targets and provides detailed implementation information on the steps we must take to increase access to high quality HIV/AIDS care and treatment, decrease new HIV infections, and reduce HIV-related health disparities.

This targeted approach focuses on more effective coordination of all federal efforts and more efficient use of federal resources.

Today, House Republican Whip Eric Cantor held a jobs fair at a Virginia high school with a number of private companies that are looking to hire. He denounced the Recovery Act claimed "government spending" doesn't create jobs, however the jobs fair he was hosting included several federal government agencies and companies that received over $52 million in Recovery Act funding to create jobs. On March 4th, the House passed the Hiring Incentives to Restore Employment (HIRE) Act by a vote of 217-201 to encourage employers to hire workers who were previously unemployed or only working part time. The President signed the legislation into law on March 18th. The bill provides:

The Democratic-led Congress continues working to create American jobs and strengthen the economy--we must bring down the unemployment rate and restore American job security. Congressional Republicans continue to vote in lock step against job creation, tax cuts and recovery efforts and instead support the special interests--Wall Street banks, Big Oil and insurance companies.
