Conyers Invites McClellan to Testify June 20th

(Washington, DC)- Today, House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers, Jr. (D-MI) invited former White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan to testify before the Committee at a June 20th hearing about reported efforts to cover up the role of the White House in the Valerie Plame leak as described in his recent book, What Happened: Inside the Bush White House and Washington's Culture of Deception.

Today Chairman Henry Waxman and Ranking Member Tom Davis of the Oversight Committee issued a proposed Committee report on White House contacts with Jack Abramoff that concludes that Mr. Abramoff had personal contact with President Bush, that high-level White House officials held Mr. Abramoff and his associates in high regard and solicited recommendations from them on policy matters, that Mr. Abramoff and his associates influenced some White House actions, and that Mr.

Today, the Department of Labor released its employment report for May showing a loss of 49,000 jobs, and an unemployment rate that increased to 5.5 percent -- the biggest monthly rise since 1986. The economy has lost nearly 325,000 since the beginning of the year.

The reports issued today by a bipartisan majority of the Senate Intelligence Committee are additional confirmation of the fact that the Bush Administration's justification for invading Iraq was built on false pretenses, misrepresentations, and deception.

By a vote of 214-210, the House has just passed the final agreement on the fiscal year 2009 budget (S. Con. Res. 70). For the first time since the year 2000, the Congress will pass a budget during an election year. This budget is fiscally responsible, reduces the deficit, and returns the nation's budget to balance in 2012 and is fully compliant with pay-as-you-go budget rules.
