The Burmese military junta's decision to continue the detention of democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi is deplorable and deserves the full condemnation of the international community. A clear message must be sent that Aung San Suu Kyi and all other prisoners of conscience in Burma must be released, immediately and unconditionally.

At this time of extreme devastation caused by Cyclone Nargis, with at 78,000 people killed and more than 56,000 missing, the Burmese people desperately need legitimate leadership.

EMANUEL STATEMENT ON WHITE HOUSE OPPOSITION TO MILITARY PAY RAISE

Washington, D.C. -- House Democratic Caucus Chairman Rahm Emanuel issued the following statement after the White House announced that it "strongly opposes" Democratic efforts to provide troops with a 3.9 percent pay raise. This is the second year in a row that the White House has opposed Democrats' efforts to provide a more substantial pay raise to our troops. Emanuel's statement is below.

The House is currently debating the Renewable Energy and Job Creation Act, H.R. 6049, to extend and expand tax incentives for renewable energy, retain and create hundreds of thousands of green jobs, spur American innovation and business investment, cut taxes for millions of Americans, and close loopholes allowing U.S. corporations and executives to avoid U.S. taxes by shipping jobs and investment overseas.

House passes slew of bills for vets, troops

The House of Representatives passed a bipartisan collection of seven bills and four resolutions in a pre-Memorial Day rush of legislation aimed at showing service members, veterans and their families that Congress cares.

Three more bills are scheduled for a vote Wednesday.
