Speaker Nancy Pelosi was joined at her weekly news conference this morning by Congressmen Ike Skelton, Howard Berman and Rahm Emanuel. In advance of General David Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan Crocker coming to testify before Congress next week on the war in Iraq, the Democrats discussed the cost of the war to the U.S. economy, America's military readiness, and our standing in the world. Below are excerpts of their remarks:

Washington, D.C. -- Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Democratic and Republican Members of the House and Senate and Martin Luther King III joined together this morning at a ceremony in the Capitol to celebrate the life and legacy of the Rev Martin Luther King Jr. Tomorrow marks the 40th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. King. Democratic Caucus Chairman Rahm Emanuel issued the following statement today regarding Congressional Republicans and earmark reform:

The House has just passed the Tom Lantos and Henry J. Hyde United States Global Leadership Against HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria Reauthorization Act, H.R. 5501, by a vote of 308-116. This bill authorizes $50 billion for the United States' bilateral and multilateral programs to combat HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria for fiscal years 2009 through 2013.

The Veterans' Affairs Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations is currently holding a hearing, "Traumatic Brain Injury Related Vision Issues."
