In July the Oversight Committee held a hearing, "FEMA's Response to Reports of Toxic Trailers." The Committee heard testimony from residents occupying FEMA trailers, experts who are familiar with the health impact of formaldehyde, and from FEMA Administrator Paulison.

The Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming is currently holding a hearing, "Drilling for Answers on Oil and Gas Prices, Profits, and Alternatives." Top-level executives from the five largest oil companies will discuss the current state of oil and gas prices, oil company profits, and the need for clean, renewable fuels to ease demand for oil and cut global warming pollution.

The resignation of HUD Secretary Alphonso Jackson comes at a time when millions of American families are facing the prospect of losing their homes.

The Administration's response to the housing crisis should have been more rapid and more comprehensive. I urge President Bush to work with the Senate and change his approach to this crisis by appointing a new HUD Secretary who will aggressively address urgent housing issues in America, including the foreclosure crisis.

Congressional Democrats will continue to work to provide additional assistance to millions of families at risk of losing their homes, bring much-needed relief to consumers feeling the impact of the economic downturn, and ensure meaningful regulation of the financial system.

While Secretary Paulson's plan to restructure regulation of the financial markets is a step in the right direction, we need to go further; we must take steps now to provide help to families who are hurting.

Chairman Waxman Statement on EPA's Greenhouse Gas Decision

WASHINGTON, DC -- Today Chairman Henry A. Waxman released the following statement in response to a letter from EPA Administrator Johnson:

"This is a transparent delaying tactic and a major reversal of EPA's position. In December, Administrator Johnson found that CO2 emissions endanger the environment and proposed new standards for motor vehicles. Today's action repudiates those efforts.

President Bush's speech today on Iraq failed to offer any plan for the safe return of our brave men and women. In fact, the Administration reportedly is preparing to tell the American people that we must maintain 140,000 troops in Iraq indefinitely.

The war will cost Americans more than $3 trillion and continues to jeopardize our military's ability to respond to threats anywhere else on the globe. Money spent in Iraq is desperately needed at home to educate our children, rebuild our infrastructure and provide health care for millions of Americans.
