Congress approved and the President signed legislation providing nearly a half trillion dollars to fully fund the Defense Department for 2008. House Democrats have also provided an additional $50 billion for our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. The President and Senate Republicans are now blocking this funding because it ties funding to bringing our troops home from Iraq responsibly, safely, and soon.

Tonight the House will vote on whether to override this cruel veto.

On Tuesday, President Bush vetoed the Labor-Health-Education Appropriations bill -- a bipartisan and fiscally responsible bill that addresses the needs and priorities of the American people -- calling these investments in domestic initiatives dedicated to helping families "excessive."

The House has just passed the RESTORE Act of 2007 (Responsible Electronic Surveillance That is Overseen, Reviewed, and Effective), H.R. 3773 by a vote of 227-189. This bill provides the Intelligence Community with effective tools to conduct surveillance of foreign targets outside the United States but restores Constitutional checks and balances that were not contained in President Bush's bill, the Protect America Act (PAA).

Today the House will debate the Mortgage Reform and Anti-Predatory Lending Act of 2007, H.R. 3915, sponsored by Rep. Brad Miller (NC-13).
