The House has just passed the "Second Chance Act of 2007," H.R. 1593, by a vote of 347-62. The bill allocates $360 million towards a variety of reentry programs for ex-offenders. One of the main components of the bill is the funding of demonstration projects that would provide ex-offenders with a coordinated continuum of housing, education, health, employment, and mentoring services. This broad array of services would provide stability and make the transition for ex-offenders easier, in turn reducing recidivism.

The President again vetoed a bipartisan and fiscally responsible bill that addresses the priorities of the American people: education for our children, assistance in paying skyrocketing energy costs, veterans' health care, and other urgent health research on cancer and other serious medical problems.

At the same time, President Bush and his Congressional allies demand hundreds of billions of dollars for the war in Iraq -- none of it paid for.
