CARNEY ANNOUNCES NATIONAL GUARD READINESS HEARING

May 14, 2007 (WASHINGTON) -- Congressman Christopher P. Carney, Chairman of the Homeland Security Subcommittee on Management, Investigations, and Oversight, announced that he will hold a hearing to examine the National Guard's readiness and equipping levels to respond to domestic emergencies in light of the Guard's repeated and extended deployments overseas.

Rice Testimony Postponed

Tenet to Cooperate in Committee Investigation

WASHINGTON, DC -- Today Chairman Henry A. Waxman announced that the Oversight Committee will postpone the hearing with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice from May 15, 2007, to June 19, 2007. The hearing is being postponed to allow former CIA Director George Tenet to testify with Secretary Rice and to accommodate Secretary Rice's travel schedule.

This morning, the Chief Judge of the US District Court for the District of Columbia District signed an order to grant Monica Goodling limited use immunity for testimony and related information she provides to the House Judiciary Committee in connection with the Committee's investigation into the US Attorneys firings and related matters.

Judiciary Chairman John Conyers responded:

"Monica Goodling is a critical witness to this ongoing investigation. We look forward to hearing her testimony as promptly as possible."

On April 16, a group of 11 retired three-star and four-star generals and admirals issued a report entitled, "National Security and the Threat of Climate Change." This report concluded that global warming "presents significant national security challenges to the United States." It focuses on how climate change "can act as a threat multiplier for instability in some of the most volatile regions of the world." The Intelligence Authorization bill follows the recommendations of these 11 retired generals and admirals by requesting the Nation

Tonight, the House is considering HR 2082, the FY 2008 Intelligence Authorization. The bill strengthens intelligence by adding funds to both CIA and military elements for Human Intelligence (HUMINT) training, investing in language training for intelligence collectors and analysts in language translation capabilities, adding funding for sending additional intelligence analysts overseas, and investing in strengthening counterintelligence field operations.
