In May, while the American people and small businesses were crying out for help in dealing with a pandemic and recession, Sen. McConnell dismissed their needs, saying that Senate Republicans would ‘take a pause’ and ‘wait and see.’ Now, after months of inaction, Republicans are finally realizing the damage their pause has done to the American economy and our nation’s health.

On Labor Day, we pay tribute to the working Americans who are the backbone of our economy and the foundation of our strength. Over generations, the men and women of labor built the middle class and advanced progress and prosperity for hard-working families, fighting to secure the 40-hour workweek, fair wages and overtime, workplace safety, family leave and the right to collective bargaining.

On Labor Day, our nation pays tribute to the working Americans who are the backbone of our economy and the foundation of our strength – remembering that the middle class has a union label on it.

The President’s repeated disparagement of our men and women in uniform, calling them ‘losers’ and ‘suckers,’ is profoundly appalling. In 2015, he attacked Senator John McCain saying that ‘I like people who weren’t captured.’ Every day, Trump makes clear that he does not comprehend what it means to sacrifice for one’s country – as he consistently puts his own interests ahead of our national security and those who defend it.

Chairman Bobby Scott of Virginia delivered the Weekly Democratic Address. In this week’s address, the Chairman discussed the impact of the pandemic on children and underscored the urgent need for the Senate to pass the Heroes Act, which would ensure schools are safe for children, teachers and families to begin the school year without risking their health and safety.
