During Hispanic Heritage Month, our nation honors our country’s vibrant, hard-working, entrepreneurial and patriotic Latino community. This year, we mark this occasion as our nation confronts a coronavirus pandemic that has inflicted a disproportionate and devasting impact on communities of color, bringing to light the health and economic disparities faced by many Latinos and Latinas — with millions unemployed, food-insecure or at risk of being evicted from their homes.

Paul and I are heartbroken to learn of the passing of our dear friend Ann Getty. Ann loved San Francisco and dedicated her extraordinary life to strengthening and enriching the cultural life of our community and building a brighter future for all who call our city home.

I want to bring in House Speaker Nancy Pelosi now, a Democrat who represents San Francisco. Madam Speaker, let's start there in California with the wildfires that are raging.

Our meeting culminated with the Speakers issuing a powerful joint declaration, which states: “We shall also pay particular attention to environmental justice for economically vulnerable and front-line communities. Committing to fight against environmental injustice requires providing a healthy environment, equal opportunity and meaningful involvement in environmental decisions to all people, regardless of race, color, gender, orientation, national origin, belief, or socio-economic condition. Climate policy can end the perpetuation of systemic inequalities.”

Twenty-six years ago, the landmark Violence Against Women Act was enacted, uniting our communities and our nation in the fight against domestic violence in America.
