“This weekend, our nation celebrates 9 years since we passed the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, expanding critical hate crimes protections to include gender, sexual orientation, gender identity and disability, and fulfilling our responsibility to pursue freedom, equality and justice for all Americans.  Today, 20 years since Matthew Shepard’s murder, we feel especially close to his memory as he is interred in honor at the National Cathedral in Washington.  

“The GOP is desperate to change the conversation from their assault on Americans’ health care to the baseless fear of some families 1,000 miles away from the border.  Despite Republicans’ fearmongering, this group of families may not even make it to the U.S. border, and those migrating for economic reasons will not qualify for asylum. 

“After nearly two years of spitefully acting to raise American’s health costs, slash Medicare and Medicaid, and destroy protections for people with pre-existing conditions, it is hard to take President Trump seriously on prescription drug prices with this proposal just 12 days from the election.

The well-being and financial stability of America’s working families is under assault.  The passage of the GOP tax scam for the rich has added $2 trillion to the national debt, and now Senator McConnell says that Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security are “the real drivers of debt” and that “the single biggest disappointment of my time in Congress has been our failure” to cut them. 

"Our firefighters are our nobility, and our city of San Francisco has been strengthened by the leadership of Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White.  Chief Hayes-White has dedicated nearly three decades of her life to serving the people of her beloved San Francisco, and she will be deeply missed when she retires.

“Every day, Republicans further expose their brutal agenda to destroy Americans’ health care.  President Trump is once again cynically pushing families into shoddy junk plans that can discriminate against pre-existing conditions and that do not cover essential health benefits, while making dependable health coverage more expensive for everyone else. 

“At this critical point for the Hunters Point clean-up, I am proud to have fought in the Congress to secure an additional $60.4 million in federal funding above the President’s budget for excavation, resampling and rescanning of the base – on top of the $36 million in base clean-up funding I secured for the Shipyard in the 2018 omnibus funding bill.  These funds will ensure that every area touched by Tetra Tech EC will be retested, and the health and safety of the Bayview-Hunters Point Community will be protected.
