Leader Pelosi. Good morning. We come to the steps of the Capitol in a spirit of community and love for the people of the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. As we all know, this fall, Hurricane Irma and Maria devastated the people of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Our fellow Americans are still waiting for food, water and relief. They need our help and they need it now. It is long overdue.

This week, Republicans will bring a bill to the floor to repeal the Independent Payment Advisory Board (IPAB) that is not paid for. While we understand that some of us support the repeal of IPAB, we urge you to stand with us and vote against the bill. We believe it is undeniably hypocritical for Republicans to offset the Children’s Health Insurance Program, Community Health Centers and other public health extenders on the backs of beneficiaries and the nation’s health, while voting to repeal IPAB without offsets.

Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission focuses on whether a business can legally discriminate against customers based on sexual orientation, race, religion and ability, among others, by citing First Amendment protections for “sincerely” held religious beliefs.
