Press Releases
Congratulations and thank you for your leadership in last week's victory for the American people: protecting the Affordable Care Act and defeating Republicans' monstrosity of a bill.
I am deeply grateful to the Caucus for heeding the all-hands-on-deck call to action. Our inside maneuvering was amplified in a very strong way by outside mobilization. The town halls, roundtables and events you held around the nation galvanized the opposition to repealing the ACA and stirred the American people to action – including many who had never been involved before. It was a remarkable achievement.
Social media made a big difference in our success. Our unity made a big difference to social media. Now, strengthened by our unity, we must finalize our next steps.
"Today, President Trump showed he is not interested in ensuring world-class education for all America's children. By signing these resolutions, he is actively jeopardizing the successful implementation of the overwhelmingly bipartisan Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), while also turning his back on our teachers and school leaders.
Below is a full transcript of the address:
"Last summer, a foreign power intervened in our presidential election in an effort to influence the outcome on behalf of one of the candidates.
"That power was Russia, and the candidate was Donald J. Trump, now President of the United States. This is not a story made up to discredit Mr. Trump, but the consensus conclusion of the entire U.S. intelligence community.
"More ominously, the intelligence community has concluded Vladimir Putin ordered this meddling and will do it again.
"Good afternoon. I'm very proud to be here with the House Democratic Leadership. The unity of our House Democratic Members was a very important message to the country, that we are very proud of the Affordable Care Act. Yesterday, as you know, was the 7-year Anniversary of the President signing the bill. And the American people expressed their support for it. That message became very clear to our colleagues on the Republican side of the aisle.
