Dear Democratic Colleague,

Today, solemnly, marks one year since the murder of George Floyd. Almost immediately following his death, the House, led by Congresswoman Karen Bass, introduced the Justice in Policing Act. The House passed the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act on June 25, exactly one month after George Floyd's murder. In this new Congress once again, we proudly passed this vital legislation.

As Congresswoman Bass engages in negotiations on next steps, we remain hopeful that we will, in a bipartisan spirit, reach agreement and pass this legislation in its final form. As she and Senators Booker and Scott stated yesterday, "While we are still working through our differences on key issues, we continue to make progress toward a compromise and remain optimistic about the prospects of achieving that goal."

Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement in recognition of Harvey Milk Day, which is celebrated every year in California in honor of the birthday of slain civil rights leader and San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk:

"On Harvey Milk Day, Americans in San Francisco, across California and around the nation celebrate a courageous, visionary and trailblazing leader, who dared to dream of a world where all could live with pride. On what would have been Harvey's 91st birthday, we remember his courage to live authentically and his fierce voice for justice, which has inspired generations of loud and proud activists to carry on his causes.

"The announced ceasefire between Israel and Hamas is welcome news, and we thank the Biden Administration for its extensive engagement and diplomacy.

"America remains committed to supporting the security of Israel, our friend and ally. We believe it is critical for the security of Israel for Israelis and Palestinians to both be able to live in peace.

"Now, with this essential ceasefire, it is incumbent upon leaders in the region to respect Israeli and Palestinian lives and strive for a lasting peace."
