Portrait Unveiling Ceremony for Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm

This afternoon, Speaker Pelosi, Congressional Black Caucus Chairwoman Barbara Lee, and Members of the CBC held a portrait unveiling ceremony for the late Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm. This year marks the 40th anniversary of Congresswoman Chisholm's swearing in as a Member of the House.

House Announces Next Steps to Green the Capitol

Today, Speaker Pelosi released the Green the Capitol Year End Report, which details the successes achieved in the first 18 months of the program. Building on the House's established leadership position in carbon and energy-use reductions, the report calls for all of the House's business practices to meet self-imposed sustainability standards including becoming both cost and energy efficient over the next two years and making waste and carbon reduction efforts affect all day-to-day operations.

On President Obama's Announcement on Troop Withdrawal From Iraq

President Obama's announcement of a withdrawal schedule for US combat troops in Iraq is good news because it signals that the war is coming to an end. I join the President in commending our troops for the patriotism, courage, and sacrifice which has characterized their service in Iraq.

As President Obama's Iraq policy is implemented, the remaining missions given to our remaining forces must be clearly defined and narrowly focused so that the number of troops needed to perform them is as small as possible. The President's decision means that the time has come at last for Iraq's own security forces to have the prime responsibility for Iraq's security.

Capitol Power Plant Should Switch to 100 Percent Natural Gas

Today, Speaker Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid sent the following letter to the Acting Architect of the Capitol, Stephen T. Ayers, asking that the Capitol Power Plant (CPP) use 100 percent natural gas for its operations. They write, "the switch to natural gas will allow the CPP to dramatically reduce carbon and criteria pollutant emissions, eliminating more than 95 percent of sulfur oxides and at least 50 percent of carbon monoxide...We strongly encourage you to move forward aggressively with us on a comprehensive set of policies for the entire Capitol complex and the entire Legislative Branch to quickly reduce emissions and petroleum consumption through energy efficiency, renewable energy, and clean alternative fuels."
