“By completing the appropriations bills that the previous Administration delayed, and by rejecting the deep cuts affecting our children, our workers, and our economy that President Bush proposed, Congress can now focus its full attention on the pressing challenges facing our nation. In this legislation, and because of the condition of our economy and the financial crisis, Congress also rejected a cost of living increase for Members for next year."

Today, the Education and Labor Committee held a hearing to build on the conversations happening across the country on national service and volunteerism, examining the importance of national and community service in meeting critical economic needs across the country.

Tonight President Obama offered a frank assessment of the challenges facing our country and a path to get America on the right track. His outstanding speech to a Joint Session of Congress -- serious, but full of hope and optimism -- offered a profoundly New Direction from the one that resulted in the economic crisis and stunning deficits of today.
President Obama understands the needs of the American people and the economy and that we first have to get out of the recession and get our economy growing. He has already worked with Congress to create and save millions of jobs with the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Tonight at 9pm EST, President Obama will address a Joint Session of Congress saying, "now is the time to act boldly and wisely -- to not only revive this economy, but to build a new foundation for lasting prosperity. Now is the time to jumpstart job creation, re-start lending, and invest in areas like energy, health care, and education that will grow our economy, even as we make hard choices to bring our deficit down. That is what my economic agenda is designed to do, and that's what I'd like to talk to you about tonight."

The Senate's confirmation of Secretary Hilda Solis begins a sorely needed new era at the Department of Labor. Working together, President Obama, Secretary Solis, and the Congress will once again put the Labor Department on the side of working people who deserve fair wages, safe workplaces, job training to compete and win in the global economy, and the right to organize and bargain collectively.
Secretary Solis is uniquely qualified to lead the Labor Department in this new era due to her long record of fighting for better wages, protecting worker safety, and securing their pension.
I congratulate my dear friend on her confirmation and look forward to working with her in the days ahead.

Northern Trust Corp., which in November received about $1.5 billion as part of the U.S. Treasury Department's Troubled Asset Relief Program, defended Tuesday its wining and dining of clients during the recent Northern Trust Open in California.Entertainment Web site TMZ.com on Tuesday reported that Northern flew hundreds of clients and workers to California and put some of them up at ritzy hotels, including the Ritz Carlton in the Los Angeles area, and entertained them with such groups as Chicago, Earth Wind & Fire and Sheryl Crow.
