The Reducing Over-Classification Act, H.R. 553, enhances accountability by requiring the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to develop a strategy to prevent over-classification of security information and improve the access of state and local law enforcement, as well as the public, to DHS documents. The House passed an identical bill on July 30, 2008.

In a new Gallup poll released today, 75 percent of those surveyed support economic recovery legislation. But in the face of this escalating crisis, Americans understand there is no quick fix to our economic troubles. A strong majority -- 64 percent -- say President Obama's Recovery and Reinvestment Act will make the economy better though major results will take longer than one year.
This Black History Month is especially significant as we recognize three historic events: the Inauguration of Barack Obama; the centennial celebration of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP); and, the bicentennial of Abraham Lincoln's birth. Each of these milestones illustrates the vibrancy of our nation, and our commitment to progress and equality for all.In his inspirational Inaugural Address, President Obama reminded us that while 'we are in the midst of crisis,' we are united in the common purpose of achieving a greater measure of peace and prosperity for all of our people, and for all citizens of the world.
