Chairman Miller Responds to Bush Administration on No Child Left BehindWASHINGTON, D.C. -- U.S. Rep. George Miller (D-CA) issued the following response to remarks made today by U.S. Education Secretary Margaret Spellings on the reauthorization of No Child Left Behind. Miller, the chairman of the House Education and Labor Committee, has been leading efforts in the House to significantly improve No Child Left Behind.

"Like the American people, Democrats know that we urgently need a change of course in Iraq as political progress -- the primary goal of the surge -- remains out of reach. It is a failure of leadership when our President calls 2007 'incredibly successful beyond anybody's expectations' when the Iraqi government has done so little to achieve stability and it has been the most lethal year yet for American troops."Our nation faces great challenges at home and abroad. We need more clear-eyed and realistic assessments -- and more willingness to work toward solutions.
Our initiative will assist hard-hit families by promoting consumer confidence, economic growth, and job creation. We will work for economic security for those with the greatest economic hardships: Americans facing rising unemployment rates and stagnant wages, spiraling costs for health care and loss of coverage, increasing energy prices, and the devastating consequences of the sub-prime mortgage crisis.
