"Today the Department of Justice gave notice that it would not object to the House Judiciary Committee's grant of use immunity for Monica Goodling. I believe obtaining her testimony will be a critical step in our efforts to get to the truth about the circumstances surrounding the US Attorney firings and possible politicization in the Department's prosecutorial function. The Committee will be moving expeditiously to apply for the court order so that we can schedule a hearing promptly."

Inspector General Launches Investigation Requested by Chairman Miller into Education Department, Lender Conflicts of InterestWASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Inspector General for the U.S. Department of Education has launched an investigation requested by U.S. Rep. George Miller (D-CA) into the potential conflicts of interest among Department employees, lenders, and other participants in the federal student loan programs. John P. Higgins Jr., the Department's Inspector General, wrote to Miller yesterday to inform him that his office had agreed to Miller's request, and had already taken steps to begin their probe.

In 2003 the lab was transferred from the Department of Energy to DHS's Science & Technology Directorate.
