Dear Democratic Colleague,
Last week's actions in the Senate and on the Census call upon us to take immediate action to make historic progress on many of the top priorities facing the Congress and the American people.
First, the Senate passed infrastructure legislation with an overwhelmingly bipartisan vote. We salute the passage of this bill and the bipartisan nature of it. It is not, however, inclusive of the totality of President Biden and Congressional Democrats' vision to Build Back Better. House Chairs of the committees of jurisdiction, their Members and staff are reviewing the bill.
San Francisco — Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued this statement on the situation in Afghanistan:
"The President is to be commended for the clarity of purpose of his statement on Afghanistan and the actions he has taken.
"The Taliban must know that the world is watching its actions. We are deeply concerned about reports regarding the Taliban's brutal treatment of all Afghans, especially women and girls. The U.S., the international community and the Afghan government must do everything we can to protect women and girls from inhumane treatment by the Taliban.
San Francisco — Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement after a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck in Saint-Louis-du-Sud, Haiti:
"The Congress joins all those who are praying for the people of Haiti in the wake of a devastating earthquake this morning. Our thoughts are with all families affected by this heartbreaking disaster, especially those who have lost or are still missing loved ones. Some communities are still recovering from the catastrophic 2010 earthquake, which left devastation that a delegation I led sadly witnessed on a visit weeks after. We again saw the ongoing crisis it created on a 2015 visit.
Dear Colleague,
A key priority for strengthening the Congress so that it can best serve the American people is ensuring that our offices and Committees have access to the best talent in America.
As Speaker, I have been proud to take steps to ensure a diversity of experience and talent among staff, so that the halls of Congress, at every level, truly reflect those who we are honored to serve.
To that end, today, it is my privilege to announce an important new reform for our institution: raising the maximum annual rate of pay for staff to $199,300. This order will help the Congress recruit and retain the outstanding and diverse talent that we need, as it also helps ensure parity between employees of the House of Representatives and other employees of the Federal Government.
Washington, D.C. – Speaker Pelosi Spokesperson Robyn Patterson issued this statement following former President Trump's threat against a member of the U.S. Capitol Police:
