Press Releases
Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement after the U.S. Department of Agriculture's proposed rule to eliminate state flexibility in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) that would slash food assistance for at least 3 million people and jeopardize access to free school meals for 500,000 low-income students:
"The Administration's latest act of staggering callousness would steal food off the table of working families and hungry children, and dismantle proven pathways out of poverty for millions. This proposal perfectly showcases the Republicans' cynical special interest agenda that gives billion-dollar handouts to big corporations and the wealthy few, and then steals from children, veterans, seniors and working families to make up the difference.
Yesterday, a bipartisan agreement was reached that will invest in middle class priorities that advance the health, financial security and well-being of the American people and enhance our national security. We are pleased to have done so with an agreement that is bold, bipartisan and a victory for Democrats and the American people.
Sequestration: Importantly, Democrats have achieved an agreement that permanently ends the threat of sequestration. We are pleased that the Administration has finally agreed to join Democrats in ending sequestration's devastating cuts that have threatened our investments to keep America Number One in the global economy and to ensure our national security.
Offsets: After a long negotiation, we have only agreed upon offsets that were part of an earlier bipartisan agreement.
Speaker Pelosi. Good morning! It's wonderful to be here! Thank you Yvonne, thank you Yvonne White for your wonderful introduction but mostly for your strong leadership in Michigan!
Let us all salute Derrick Johnson for his leadership to advance civil rights and equality across our country – from sea to shining sea.
It is always a pleasure to see Chairman Leon Russell, a persistent and effective force for change, and to be here with each and every one of you.
Let me just say, is anyone here from California?
[Cheers]
I know from San Francisco, Amos Brown is here.
And I know Maryland is here, and Baltimore is here and represented.
[Cheers]
Washington, D.C. – Today, Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer released the following statement after the four Congressional leaders and President Trump reached a budget caps agreement:
"Today, a bipartisan agreement has been reached that will enhance our national security and invest in middle class priorities that advance the health, financial security and well-being of the American people.

Dear Democratic Colleague,
As we enter the August District Work Period, we must show the American people how Democrats are fighting For The People.
We cannot get distracted by whatever outrageous behavior is coming out of 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.
"At every turn, the Trump Administration is working to dismantle protections for people with pre-existing conditions.
"While the GOP tries to push families into junk health insurance plans and crushing medical bills, Democrats are hard at work to protect the health care of hard-working Americans. This summer, House Democrats passed the Strengthening Health Care and Lowering Prescription Drug Costs Act to block the Trump Administration's cynical expansion of junk health plans.
"The GOP Senate must act on this bill to protect and strengthen the health care of the American people. Families need lower health costs and prescription drug prices, not fewer protections and bigger medical bills."
Washington, D.C. – Speaker Pelosi joined Members of Congress and advocates for a press event ahead of the House vote on H.R. 582, the Raise The Wage Act. Below are the Speaker's remarks:
Speaker Pelosi. Good morning. We have got to wake up every morning with a big smile on our face and show the world all the love in our hearts. And that love in our hearts is about fairness, and respect and valuing work.
House Democrats are here to deliver on the promise to the American people to give hard-working men and women a well-deserved raise.
[Applause]
We salute our Chairman Bobby Scott, who is managing the bill on the Floor. And some of us will come and go to speak on the Floor as we convey our message this morning. But his work was indispensable to getting us to this place, working with members to come to consensus.
Speaker Pelosi. Thank you very much, Mr. Speaker. I thank the gentleman for yielding. I thank him for his extraordinary leadership, historic, really, giving us this opportunity today to do something very special for the American people, for America's working families.
This is an historic day. Yes, because we are raising the minimum wage here in the House of Representatives, because we are channeling the energy of so many people across the country for fairness in the workplace, but it also happens to be the 171st anniversary of the Seneca Falls Convention.
Speaker Pelosi. Good afternoon. Good afternoon.
Yesterday, our country lost a giant of the Court and a clarion voice for justice, equality and the rule of law, Justice John Paul Stevens.
Justice Stevens was a true guardian of the Constitution. He made history not only as [one of] the longest serving justice[s], but as one of its finest. Our country mourns his loss.
He will be lying in state Monday. The service will be Tuesday. And again, it is a great loss to our country.
Last night, I had a particular pleasant experience, which was to sign the legislation which enabled us to use the Washington Monument as a background for the moon launch. Pretty exciting. I hope everyone will take advantage of observing that as we observe that historic event in our country's – the world's history. It is pretty exciting.
"For the past two years, California communities and families have experienced the deadliest wildfires on record. For months, our brave firefighters, first responders and National Guard, risked all to fight the fires and keep families and loved ones safe. After advocating strongly for timely, accurate reimbursements that California is owed, I commend USDA for their swift response to my concerns and their continued commitment to honoring current agreements and pledge to expedite payments to our state agencies and our communities, who are still reeling from the destruction and struggling to rebuild and to become whole.
