House Launches Wide-ranging Investigation into Causes, Accountability, and Remedies of America's Economic Crisis

Much of the current turmoil in the economy could have been prevented with responsible regulation and oversight by the executive branch. But the foundation of the Bush Administration's approach to governance is the absence of meaningful regulation -- turning a blind eye to waste, fraud, abuse, as well as general mismanagement of everything from Wall Street to the war in Iraq.

While President Bush and Sen. John McCain have repeatedly called for less regulation:

Pelosi to Bush: We Need Comprehensive Response to Financial Crisis and Another Economic Recovery Effort

Speaker Pelosi sent the following letter this evening to President Bush urging him to give a comprehensive and effective systemic response to ongoing turmoil in the financial markets and saying that the worsening economy demands that we have another economic recovery package.

Dear Mr. President:

The worsening crisis in our financial markets demands strong solutions and decisive leadership.

Already, House and Senate committees are investigating both the regulatory lapses and market oversight failures that resulted in this crisis, as well as possible solutions. This work will continue.

Yesterday, the House passed the Comprehensive American Energy Security and Consumer Protection Act which takes aggressive steps to crack down on the extreme misconduct at the Mineral Management Service -- the agency charged with collecting royalties from oil and gas companies. Royalties are one of the largest sources of revenue for the federal government after taxes.

The GOP Energy Plan: 'None of the Above'

Americans know it is time for an oil change - the Comprehensive American Energy Security and Consumer Protection Act passed by the House yesterday will lower costs for consumers, invest in clean, renewable energy resources, expand our domestic energy supply, and promote greater energy efficiency and conservation. Most Republicans voted 'No.'

Instead of working with Democrats to bring relief to consumers, most Republicans have chosen to grandstand for cameras in the name of Big Oil rather than stand up for the American people. Time and again, Republicans have been given the opportunity to vote for an American-owned energy policy to bring down the price at the pump, increase fuel efficiency, invest in clean, renewable energy resources and protect our national security.
