Consumers Union 'Strongly Endorses' Affordable Health Care For America Act

This afternoon, the Consumers Union issued a statement endorsing the Affordable Health Care For America Act:

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Consumers Union, the independent, nonprofit publisher of Consumer Reports, strongly endorses H.R. 3962, the "Affordable Health Care for America Act," and urges Members of the House to vote for it without damaging amendments.

"Health care is a consumer crisis with its crippling costs, its unreliability, and lack of access for too many Americans. By creating a more secure, affordable health care system, the House bill goes a long way towards solving the crisis," said Jim Guest, President of Consumers Union.

GOP 'Eight Or Nine Ideas' vs. Comprehensive Health Reform

As the House moves forward with the Affordable Health Care for America Act -- comprehensive health insurance reform to protect consumers, hold insurance companies accountable, rein in health care costs, reduce the deficit, and cover 36 million uninsured Americans -- Americans are still waiting for Congressional Republicans to offer more than just obstructionism. It has been 139 days since Congressional Republicans promised they would release comprehensive health care reform legislation -- and still nothing.

On Sunday, House Republican Leader John Boehner announced Congressional Republicans will offer "eight or nine ideas."

Health Insurance Reform Mythbuster: 'Public Health Insurance Option Will Lead to Higher Premiums, Not Lower Premiums'

Opponents of reform continue to spread myths -- now spreading myths about the recently introduced Affordable Health Care for America Act, including saying that the public health insurance option will provide little benefit to American consumers -- leading to higher premiums, not lower premiums. But the facts continue to knock these myths down.

MYTH: The public health insurance option, as included in the Affordable Health Care for America Act, will lead to higher premiums, not lower premiums.

FACT: There is currently little competition in the health insurance marketplace in most parts of the country. Indeed, in the vast majority of states, the top two insurers in the state currently control more than 50 percent of the market:
